Hi Everyone,  

Sustainable Weight Loss

Good morning folks, I hope your day is going great.  My morning is going quite well, had my power breakfast of four-grain cereal, organic eggs with some salsa, raw milk sharp cheddar cheese, organic coffee, and purified water to wash it all down.  I'm feeling good!  Now as I absorb the nutrients from my "bfast" I will write about sustainable or permanent weight loss.  The reason I'm writing about this is that I've been bombarded recently by my clients and random individuals asking me how do they get rid of the adipose tissue (fat) for good.

Processed Foods

In the quest for ultimate, optimal health the first thing you should address is your choice of foods.  If you know your "Metabolic Type", the next thing you must do is choose foods according to your type. And these foods should revolve around "whole foods", and not PROCESSED FOODS.  What is processed food?

In the words of Paul Chek, from his book "How to Eat, Move, and Be Healthy" processed food (aka non-foods) is any food that costs more in nutritional value to digest, absorb and eliminate than it delivers.

Cultivating Non-Violence

In the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about non-violence.  With regard to yoga, non-violence, or "ahimsa," is the act of non-violence toward yourself and others.  B.K.S. Iyengar says that the best "remedy" for violence is LOVE.  To replace our negative actions and thoughts with love will bring us closer to ahimsa, and ever-closer to the yogi's ultimate journey of reaching bliss.  I myself feel like I'm more guilty of violence toward myself than violence toward others (I hope!).

Get Strong and Powerful

Go into any fitness club today and most people are all about "appearance", not "ability", "flash", not "function".  Some of them also may have big, pumped up arms and legs, but all that size is in the tissue of the muscle.  Their tendons, ligaments, and joints are weak.  If they're getting "chemical" assistance, their tendons, ligaments, and joints are even weaker.  Ask one of them to perform a pistol squat, aka single-leg squat, using the hamstring to the calf technique.

How do I Meditate?

 I've always wondered this myself.  How do I meditate?  Every time I try, the cell phone rings, my mind starts racing, and I just can't seem to sit still.  Sound familiar?  Well, I'll share with you something I did last night that really seemed to help.  First, turn off all the lights.  Perhaps light a candle or two.  Turn off the TV, radio, and cell phone.  Find a comfortable sitting position, and sit up straight.  Relax the shoulders away from the ears.  Let the eyes close, and try not to be someone trying to meditate.

What does Namaste Mean?

 I hope everyone's week is off to a great start.  Last week, I had a student ask me in a yoga class, what the heck "Namaste" meant.  Great question!  The word is ubiquitous in all yoga classes, no matter who the teacher is.  "Nama" means bow, "as" means I, and "te" means you.  I asked one of my teachers what Namaste meant to her, and she told me it was just like "Aloha" in Hawaiian.

DIETS DON'T WORK!!!

Yes I said it, and I meant it.  Diets do not work, plus they aren't conducive for permanent weight loss. Short term they may work but usually that initial weight loss will be short lived.  Cruise the local bookstores' health and fitness aisle and you will notice an abundance of diet/weightloss books each claiming to be one that will help you achieve the results that have alluded you.  Then why is it we are still battling the bulge.  What I want to stress, it's not how much you eat, it's when and what you put in your mouth that counts.

Beat the Jiggle

 Since Brad is talking about pooch bellies, I think it's only appropriate we dicuss the dreaded underarm jiggle.  I know we've felt it:  You wave good-bye to your friend and a lot more than just your hand seems to be moving!

I always get asked this question time and time again.  A majority of those times they come from women.  So here it is, I will try to explain why the pooch is there and how you can rid yourself of this situation.

I thought that these were such important issues, that I am going to answer this question in detail for the benefit of all my blog readers.
